The trek to Irshalgad is one of the most popular treks in the Sahyadris and for all the right reasons. It’s easy accessibility from cities like Pune and Mumbai, make it a hotspot for adventurers seeking a short yet immersive experience. A short drive of 2 to 3 hours, depending on your starting point, takes trekkers to Nanivali – that serves as the Base Village for this trek.
While accessibility makes this trek an unmissable adventure, the views are what most people don’t expect. Here’s a glimpse into what you would witness on your trek to Irshalgad!
The Approach to Irshalgad
Trekkers begin the approach from the base village, and almost immediately, can spot the distinctive rocky formation of Irshalgad rising above the surrounding landscape. From a distance, the pinnacle looks dramatic against the sky, giving you a clear idea of what you are walking towards. As you move ahead, the formation seems to grow larger with every step.

The Sahyadri Trail
The initial section takes you through the familiar landscape of the Sahyadris, with the trail winding through greenery and gently rising terrain. The walk is fairly comfortable at first, giving you time to settle into the rhythm of the trek. As you gain elevation, the trees gradually open up and you begin getting glimpses of the hills around you. Further ahead, the character of the trail begins to change. The comfortable earth trail gradually gives way to rocky sections, and the climb became steeper in places. It is ideal to slow down and pay more attention to your footing, particularly where the rocks are uneven or slippery.

First Views of Morbe Dam
As you climb higher, Morbe Dam slowly comes into view below. What starts as a small glimpse through the landscape gradually opens up into a much wider view of the reservoir surrounded by the rolling Sahyadri hills. The higher you climb, the more expansive the panorama becomes.

Irshalwadi & the Mountain Landscape
The trail takes you past Irshalwadi, where the landscape briefly shifts from the rugged mountain trail to a more lived-in environment. Walking past the village, with the hills rising around it, gives you a glimpse of how closely the local communities are connected to this landscape. It also makes the transition from the lower trail to the upper reaches of Irshalgad feel more gradual.

The Rocky Face of Irshalgad
As you approach the upper sections, Irshalgad begins to look considerably more rugged. Large rock faces rise around the trail, and the landscape starts feeling more dramatic than the relatively gentle trail earlier. This is also where the trek demands more concentration, with steeper and rockier sections underfoot.

The Nedhe
Eventually, you reach the Nedhe, one of the most distinctive features of Irshalgad. Standing beneath the natural opening in the rock gives you a completely different perspective of the mountain, with the surrounding landscape visible through the massive rock frame. Spend some time here taking in the views and appreciating just how unusual the formation is. Looking through the Nedhe, the landscape seems to stretch far beyond the mountain itself. The opening creates a natural frame for the hills and valleys below, making it one of the most memorable viewpoints of the trek. It is one of those spots where you naturally stop for a while instead of simply passing through.

The Pinnacle
From the upper sections, the pinnacle dominates the landscape and looks every bit as dramatic as it does from a distance. You can see the route leading towards it, but the final section looks exposed and technically demanding. Rather than pushing ahead simply to reach the highest point, we recommend to make the decision whether to climb it or not depending on how safe the access looks.
Sahyadri Panorama
From the highest safe point you can finally appreciate the scale of the surrounding Sahyadris. The rocky formation of Irshalgad falls behind while the hills, valleys and Morbe Dam stretch across the landscape. This is easily one of the most rewarding parts of the trek.

The Descent
The descent gives you an entirely different perspective of the route you climbed. Sections that seemed less noticeable on the way up, open into wide views of the landscape, and you can see the trail winding down towards the village.

To sum it up, if you are looking for an easy yet memorable adventure close to your city, that will challenge you on certain sections but also allow you ample opportunities to soak into the Sahyadri magic, we highly recommend adding Irshalgad to your bucket-list!
