Andharban Jungle Trek, Sahyadris, Maharashtra

Where is Andharban?

Andharban Trek Location and How to Reach

Andharban Jungle Trek is located in the Pune district of Maharashtra. It is within the bounds of the Western Ghats mountain range. Usually, the trek begins from a quaint village called Pimpri sitting close to Tamhini Ghat. It finishes in Bhira village, which is near the backwaters of Bhira dam.

Andhrabn Trek Distance:

  • For travelers from Pune: ~70 km (2-2.5 hours)
  • From Mumbai: ~140 km (4-5 hours)

The Andharban Jungle Trek distance is approximately 13 to 14 kilometers, starting from Pimpri village and descending all the way to Bhira, near the Bhira Dam backwaters. This moderate trek usually takes 4 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the season. At Adventure Pulse, we take you to little more than halfway through the trail and take you back on the same route in order to make it suitable for all age group and beginners. This way we avoid the last descent section to Bhira, which is relatively steep and challenging.

What does Andharban Jungle Trek has to offer and why should you pick it?

Unique Characteristics

Andharban Forest Trek is very different from most treks in Pune which typically only go upwards. Andharban Jungle Trek is a descend-through-the-forest trek.

What makes it different?

A dense jungle canopy.

As you begin your adventure from the pretty village of Pimpri, you will soon find yourself trekking through a very dense forest with lush greenery all around. The trail pass through the dense overgrowth, small and big trees and rich fauna.

Valley views on one side.

The Andharban Jungle Trek is located in the Tamhini region of Maharashtra. As we make our way through the jungle, the trail occasionally opens up to some stunning viewpoints from where one can see the vast valley down below. This valley is known as Plus Valley due to its iconic aerial view which is similar to a “+” “Plus” symbol.

Water crossings, waterfalls and misty trails.

If you love hiking around waterbodies and waterfalls then Andharban Forest Trail is the perfect trail. During the monsoon, you will find numerous small and big waterfalls, streams, cascading through the trail and hills around.

Monsoon Magic

Andharban Jungle Trek is brought to life during the rainy season. Imagine exciting waterfalls, the sound of cicadas, and clouds and mist swirling through abundant foliage. Every dreamy monsoon trek will include these features!

The Meaning Behind ‘Andharban’

What does Andharban mean?

The literal translation of Andharban is “Dark Forest”. The word ‘Andhar’ means ‘Dark’ and ‘Ban’ means ‘Forest’. Which is quite fitting for the trek as most of the path is shaded with a thick layer of vegetation so it stays dark even during daytime.

The Perfect Time to go for Andharaban Jungle Trek:

  • Rainy season (June – September): This is the best time to experience the magic of monsoon in Sahyaris. Between this period, waterfalls are active, the greenery is lush, and everything just feels alive!
  • Winter (November – February): If you want to avoid trekking in rain then you can also consider the winter months when the temperature is pleasant. The air is dry, crisp, and safe for trekking while the views are nice and clear. It is the best time to explore.

Seasonal Beauty – Monsoon vs. Winter

Monsoon Pros – Unique woodland adventure | Cons – Trails can be slippery, leeches

Winter Pros – Clear, safe trails | Cons – No waterfalls, dry vegetation

Andharban Jungle Trek Route Overview

Start to Finish: Pimpri to Bhira or Start and End at Pimpri to avoid the steep descent to Bhira.

This one-way trek begins at Pimpri village and descends 13 kilometers to Bhira. Alternatively you can return after reaching any of the view points via the same route back to Pimri.

Distance and Duration

  • Total distance: ~13-14 km for the full trek, about 7 kms for the shorter version
  • Time taken: 4 to 6 hours depending on pace
