Dzongri – 36 Hours in the Heart of Khangchendzonga National Park!

by Ayush Kanitkar / Monday, 05 October 2026 / Published in Sikkim, High Altitude Treks

In a quiet corner of West Sikkim, nearly 4000m above sea level, lies an expansive alpine meadow called Dzongri. Nearby, rising sharply from the undulating topography of the meadow, is a towering ridgeline. One that climbs 150m further and is supremely famous, especially amongst those who trek to this region of the Himalayas. The high point of this ridgeline, also known as Dzongri Top, offers some of, if not the most, grandest views of the third highest mountain in the world. Mt. Khangchendzonga, more commonly referred to as Kangchenjunga!

Each year, thousands of trekkers, a few climbers, countless monks and pilgrims undertake a grueling 22-km journey for reasons aplenty. Dzongri, is quite literally situated at the heart of the sacred Khangchendzonga National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2016, this is a highly protected mountainous region dedicated to Sikkim’s guardian deity – Mt. Kangchenjunga. It’s a mountain which is considered extremely holy and is worshipped – which is also the reason that mountaineers are not permitted to climb it from India, only from Nepal. Each year, during the festival of Pang Lhabsol, devotees visit Dzongri and offer prayers to the mountain, to keep watch over the region and the people of Sikkim.

What Makes Dzongri a Significant Landmark?

Interestingly, Dzongri is very well known given it lies smack dab in the middle of the world-renowned Goecha La Trek. Goecha La (La means pass), in ancient times, was a pass that connected the Prek Chu Valley to the Talung Valley. In recent times, restrictions have been imposed by the government in order to protect the sensitive high-altitude ecosystem and due to the inherent dangers near the glacial sections near the pass. Today, the Goecha La trek begins at the beautiful village of Yuksom (1750m) and takes one to Goecha La Viewpoint 1 (4600m) over roughly 75 kilometers.

And while most trekkers pine for the sunrise vistas of Mt Kangchenjunga from this viewpoint, Dzongri Top offers unparalleled views of the Singalila Range, the Kangchenjunga massif and the Kangchenjunga Himal range. Due to its location on the trekking route, it also serves as a very critical acclimatization pit-stop.

Dzongri – The Perfect Layover for Acclimatization!

Trekkers climb from 2950m at the campsite of Tshoka to 4000m at Dzongri in a single day. This giant leap in altitude invariably leaves people a little weak in the knees and a tad bit breathless. To allow enough time for trekkers to adapt to thinner air and to recover after the grueling 8-hour hike up, most itineraries reserve the next day for rest at Dzongri. Additionally, to adhere to the principle of “climb high, sleep low” which aids acclimatization, trekkers have the opportunity to climb to Dzongri Top before sunrise on this rest day. If the weather gods permit, what awaits at dawn is a truly life altering Himalayan vista.

From the time one arrives at the trekker’s hut at Dzongri, to when they finally depart for the meadows of Thansing, just over 36 hours have passed. Below is a small glimpse of the relatively slow and remarkably enjoyable pace of life at Dzongri during the Goecha La trek in 2025

Clouds roll in on a misty evening at Dzongri the day we arrived.

Hike to Dzongri Top – 150m to Paradise!

It’d a been a cloudy evening and the weather remained overcast throughout the night. An aborted start meant we left an hour later than we planned.

Dzongri Top – Parting of the Clouds at Sunrise!

The weather had been overcast, misty and down right dampening for the soul, since we’d arrived at Dzongri the previous evening.
From 12am to 3am – each time I poked my head outside my tent, in hope of a twinkling sky above, all I found was darkness.

We almost called off the acclimatization hike to Dzongri top as it the effort would be in vain without the view we longed for.
At 4 am, after a discussion with trek leaders across the campsite, all the groups who’d made Dzongri their home for the night decided to give it a try.
“A moving man will surely meet his luck” – or something like that !!

Final few steps to Dzongri Top as tinges of color begin to infuse the sky.

A Lazy Morning at Dzongri!

It was still only around 10 am when we descended back to our campsite at Dzongri.
A few lounged, others slept.
Me? I wandered with my camera 🙂

Monotone Mornings – Goodbye Dzongri!

The next morning, we were ready to set course onwards. The gnarly descent to Kokchurang awaited.
A while away lay Thansing and the towering figure of Mt. Pandim. But that was still hours away.

For now – breakfast!

Breakfast at Dzongri.

A feline friend say ciao 🙂

Feline companions bid adieu

The sun shone bright and several groups got ready to depart. The camp was a fusion of sights & sounds as everyone rushed around.
Some brushed, some ate, some braved the icy cold stream to fill their bottles, while some, they just basked in the glorious sunshine.

A silent moment in the bustle at camp!

“Everything the light touches…”

A final memory.
A fitting adieu.
That cup of coffee!
Dzongri, you were a joy!

Adieu! Ciao. Bye Bye Dzongri
