Machame Route
Machame is one of the most popular and scenic trekking route on Kilimanjaro. This route is preferred by trekkers who want to gradually gain altitude in order to allow better acclimatization. Thus, increasing the chances of a safe summit to the top at Uhuru Peak. This route is recommended for fit beginners as well as experienced trekkers.

Lemosho Route
Lemosho route is also consider as a challenging trekking route on Kilimanjaro. Lemosho route is considered great for acclimatization and is known for the scenic views.
Marangu Route
The Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro is Moderate in terms of the difficulty levels. It is also one of the fastest route to climb Kilimanjaro and has hut accommodation available.
Rongai Route
Trekkers wanted to approach climbing Kilimanjaro from the Northern side can consider the Rongai Route. However, this route is very quiet and dry compared to other routes on Kilimanjaro. The relatively easy terrain makes it a Moderate level trek.
Umbwe Route
One of the less recommended routes on Kilimanjaro is Umbwe Route. This one is only for experienced trekkers due to it very steep and short ascent that requires extremely good fitness levels.
Northern Circuit Route:
The longest route on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit Route (98 km) offers the best acclimatization and highest success rate.

Kilimanjaro – meaning behind the name:
The name “Kilimanjaro” translates to “Mountain of Whiteness” or “Shining Mountain”. It’s believed to be a combination of the Swahili word “kilima” (meaning mountain) and a word from the local Chagga language, “njaro,” which means “whiteness” or “shining”.

As you reach the higher camps, you enter into the alpine and moorland areas of Kilimanjaro particularly between 2800 M to 4000 M. You will surprised to see trees as tall as 30 feet, which resembles to giant cactus. These unique trees found on Kilimanjaro are actually giant groundsel, which is a flowering plant. These plants survive harshest of weather conditions on the mountain.

While you get the stunning views from most of the campsites, some campsites are better situated than others particularly the Shira camp and Karanga camp. For the summit night, trekkers usually start at midnight in order to reach the Uhuru Peak summit at the dawn of the day. Seeing the first rays of the sunlight hitting the mighty peak of Kilimanjaro is an experience very hard to describe in words.

Massive glaciers on Mt. Kilimanjaro
One surprising fact about Mt. Kilimanjaro is that it has several massive glaciers on it. Some of the popular glaciers are Furtwangler, Rebmann, Credner and Northern Ice Field. These glaciers are believed to be formed at the end of last ice age.
Due to global warming, the glaciers on Kilimanjaro are melting rapidly and have shrunk almost 85% since 1900. Scientists have predicted that these glaciers might completely disappear by 2050.

A challenging yet rewarding summit climb!
While there are no technical sections on the summit climb to Uhuru Peak, it’s a long and tiring push from the Barafu Camp. Trekkers usually leave for the summit push around midnight making their way between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Once you reach the Stell Point, depending on the weather condition you might encounter a good amount of snow, all the wat till the Summit. The temperatures are freezing and every step feels difficult due to the altitude as you are above 5000 meters. However, the views and the sense of accomplishment one gets at the Kilimanjaro Summit is worth all the struggle.
