Ultimate Guide to the Irshalgad Trek – From Pune & Mumbai

by Laveena Manwani / Tuesday, 06 October 2026 / Published in Treks in Sahyadris

Trekking in the Sahyadris: An Overview

The Sahyadris have a way of making even a short trek feel like a real adventure. There are steep ridges, rocky trails, dense monsoon greenery, ancient forts and dramatic viewpoints. You do not always need a high-altitude expedition to experience the mountains. Sometimes, a few hours on a trek near Mumbai or Pune are enough.

In fact, what’s particularly interesting is the fact, that trekking in the Sahyadris is actually the best way to train and prep for a Himalayan adventure. While the Sahyadris wont give you exposure to altitude, its terrain surely prepares for longer hikes. Uneven trails, overgrowing foliage, staircases in forts / ancient architectures, steep ascents and descents, all of it trains your mind and muscles alike.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing hike, connection with nature or training for a challenging Himalayan expedition like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, the Sahyadris have something for everyone!

Introduction to the Irshalgad Trek

Located in the Matheran range of Maharashtra, Irshalgad is known for its distinctive rocky formation and the famous Nedhe, or natural rock window. The trek combines a steady climb, village trails, rocky sections and beautiful views of the surrounding Sahyadris.

What makes Irshalgad particularly interesting is that the adventure does not come from a long distance. It comes from the character of the trail.

Irshalgad lies between the Matheran hills and Panvel, in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. The usual approach is through Nanivali, followed by a gradual climb towards Irshalwadi and then the Irshalgad plateau.

The trek is often described as an easy-to-moderate outing, although the difficulty increases towards the upper section. From Nanivali, the trek to the upper plateau and back is a little over 6 kilometres, and the trek can generally be completed in around 4 to 6 hours, depending on the group’s pace and breaks.

The landscape changes as you climb. The initial section takes you through the village and surrounding greenery. As you gain height, the trail becomes more rugged and the views begin to open up. The highlight is the Nedhe, a naturally formed opening in the rock. It is one of the features that gives Irshalgad its unmistakable character. Beyond this section lies the final pinnacle. This is where the nature of the trek changes significantly. The climb to the pinnacle involves exposed rock and requires technical climbing skills and appropriate equipment. It is not something that should be attempted simply because it is possible. For a regular trek, reaching the Nedhe and enjoying the surrounding plateau provides more than enough adventure.

How Far is Irshalgad from Mumbai and Pune?

Irshalgad makes for a convenient day trek from both Mumbai and Pune.

The trek is accessed through the Chowk–Nanivali region. From Mumbai, the road journey is roughly 60 to 80 km, depending on the starting point and route. From Pune, the distance is approximately 90 to 100 km. Exact driving time varies considerably with traffic as well as the vehicle used to commute.

The nearest railway access is around Chowk, while Panvel and Karjat are also commonly used points for reaching the trailhead.

If you are driving, it is best to plan an early start. Reaching the trail early gives you cooler conditions for the climb and enough time for a relaxed descent.

Irshalgad Trek: Kilometres, Trekking Time and Driving Time:

Here is a quick overview of what to expect:

(Distances and timings can vary depending on the exact starting point, route followed and the pace of the group.)

  • Trek Grade: Easy to Moderate
  • Distance Covered: 6 to Kms
  • Trekking time: 4 to 6 Hours (Depending on pace & breaks)
  • Mumbai to Base (Driving distance): 60 to 80 Kms
  • Pune to Base (Driving distance): 90 to 100 Kms
  • Best Season: Monsoon to Winter (Late June to Early February)
  • Base Village: Nanivali

When is the Best Time to Trek to Irshalgad?

Irshalgad can be trekked for much of the year, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons.

Monsoon: The monsoon is when the Sahyadris are at their most dramatic.

The surrounding hills turn green, clouds settle over the ridges and small streams appear along the trail. The Morbe Dam and surrounding landscape look particularly beautiful against the monsoon greenery. But monsoon also makes the trek more demanding.

Rocky sections become slippery, visibility can drop quickly and the final sections require considerably more caution. The exposed portions near the upper reaches should never be treated casually in wet conditions.

Post-Monsoon and Winter: October to February is an excellent period for those who want clearer views and more comfortable trekking conditions. The greenery remains after the monsoon, while the skies gradually become clearer. Winter mornings are particularly pleasant for a trek. The views also become a bigger part of the experience.

Summer:

Summer is possible, but it is not our preferred season for Irshalgad. Parts of the trail are exposed, and the heat can make the climb considerably more tiring. If trekking in summer, an early morning start and adequate hydration are essential.

What Should You Wear for the Irshalgad Trek?

The right footwear matters more than having expensive trekking gear. A good pair of trekking shoes with a reliable grip is strongly recommended, particularly during the monsoon. Wear comfortable, quick-dry trekking clothes. Avoid jeans and clothing that becomes heavy when wet. During the monsoon, carry a proper rain jacket or poncho. A backpack rain cover is also useful for protecting your phone, wallet, extra clothing and other essentials.

We recommend carrying the following items for a safe and pleasant experience:

  • Good trekking shoes
  • Quick-dry trekking clothes
  • Rain jacket or poncho during monsoon
  • A backpack with rain cover
  • At least 2 litres of water
  • Electrolytes
  • Snacks
  • Basic personal medication
  • A small first-aid kit
  • Cap and sunglasses during summer
  • Most importantly, wear something that allows you to move comfortably over uneven and rocky terrain.

Views from Irshalgad

The views are one of the biggest reasons to trek to Irshalgad. As you gain height, Morbe Dam begins to appear below you. The reservoir stretches across the landscape, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding green hills during the monsoon. The higher you climb, the more of the Matheran range opens up. On a clear day, you can spot several prominent Sahyadri landmarks in the surrounding landscape, including Prabalgad and Matheran, along with other hills and forts in the region. And then there is the Nedhe.

Standing beneath this natural opening in the rock gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape. It is also a reminder of how dramatically wind, water and time can shape the basalt formations of the Sahyadris. Sometimes, the best part of the trek is simply sitting there for a few minutes and taking it all in.

Is Irshalgad a Good Trek for First-Time Trekkers?

Yes, with a few important qualifications. Irshalgad can be a good introduction to Sahyadri trekking for someone who is reasonably fit and comfortable walking uphill for a few hours. The initial sections are straightforward. The challenge increases as you approach the upper section, where the trail becomes steeper and more rocky. There are sections where you need to use your hands for balance and negotiate uneven rock. During the monsoon, these sections can become considerably more slippery.

For a first-time trekker, this is precisely why we recommend going with an experienced trekking company rather than attempting the trail alone. And there is one important distinction. A first-time trekker should not attempt the final pinnacle climb. The section beyond the Nedhe involves exposed climbing. It requires appropriate climbing skills, equipment and experience.

What Age Group is the Trek Suitable For?

Irshalgad can be suitable for teenagers, adults and active older trekkers, provided they are comfortable with a few hours of uphill walking and uneven terrain. Age alone should not determine whether someone can do the trek. Fitness, previous experience, balance and comfort on rocky terrain are more important factors, particularly during the monsoon when the trail can become slippery.

Is There Mobile Network on the Irshalgad Trek?

Mobile connectivity can be inconsistent as you move away from the base village. You may have connectivity around the approach and village sections, but you should not depend on your phone for communication throughout the trek.

The Difficult Sections of the Irshalgad Trail

The Irshalgad trek has a few sections that deserve additional attention.

The Initial Ascent: The climb from Nanivali towards Irshalwadi is steady. It can feel tiring for someone who is not accustomed to walking uphill, especially in humid weather. Take your time. There is no advantage in rushing the first section and exhausting yourself early.

The Rocky Upper Section: As you move towards the Nedhe, the trail becomes rockier and steeper. During the monsoon, wet rocks can be slippery. Good footwear and careful foot placement become especially important.

The Final Pinnacle:

Irshalgad Trek Adventure Pulse 4 scaled

This is the section where trekkers need to understand the difference between trekking and technical climbing. The pinnacle beyond the Nedhe is exposed and requires climbing skills and appropriate equipment. Maharashtra’s safety guidelines specifically highlight the risks involved when pinnacle climbing is conducted without suitable equipment, competent leadership and proper rigging.

At Adventure Pulse, we believe there is no reason to climb a section simply to say that we reached the absolute top. On our last visit, we chose not to climb the pinnacle because the route did not look safe. That decision is very much in keeping with how we approach adventure. The mountain does not need to be conquered. It needs to be respected.

Do’s and Don’ts on the Irshalgad Trek

Do’s:

  • Start early, especially during summer.
  • Carry enough water and electrolytes.
  • Wear proper trekking shoes.
  • Follow the marked route and instructions of your trek leader.
  • Take extra care on wet rocks during the monsoon.
  • Keep your group together.
  • Carry your waste back with you.
  • Respect the local villages and their surroundings.
  • Check the weather before starting.
  • Turn back if conditions become unsafe.

Don’ts:

  • Do not attempt the pinnacle without the required technical expertise and equipment.
  • Do not climb wet or slippery rock just for a photograph.
  • Do not stand close to exposed edges.
  • Do not rely entirely on mobile connectivity.
  • Do not litter the trail.
  • Do not underestimate the monsoon.
  • Do not rush the descent. Descents can be super slippery in the monsoon.
  • Most importantly, do not confuse adventure with unnecessary risk.

Parting Thoughts

In a few hours, the trail takes you from a quiet village to rocky ridges overlooking the landscape around Morbe Dam. All of this in less than 60 to 100 kms from your city. While it has started becoming more and more difficult to get away from the madness and chaos of the city, Irshalgad trek is a reminder, that nature isn’t as far away from you as you may think!  The greenery, the changing terrain, the Nedhe and the views of the surrounding Sahyadris come together to create an experience that feels much bigger than the distance you have actually covered. And perhaps that is what makes Irshalgad such a wonderful trek.
