Trekking in Kashmir always leaves adventurers speechless due to its stunning landscape and beauty. However, exploring the region during winters is an entirely different experience altogether. The Kashmir Winter Marchoi Valley Trek is truly a magical experience and should definitely make it to the top of bucket list.

As the valleys and mountains turn into a snowy paradise, trekkers can enjoy stunning views of white peaks, frozen lakes, and quiet forests covered in snow. Moreover, the cold air refreshes your spirit, and the peaceful silence of the landscape offers a chance for relaxation and reflection.

The  Kashmir Winter Trek/Marchoi Valley Trek, comes with its own challenges, particularly given the low temperatures. Nevertheless, the rewards are incredible—breathtaking sights, camping in snow, and the excitement of exploring a winter wonderland. In fact, you can see Kashmir’s beauty at its best. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or a complete beginner, winter trekking in Kashmir is an adventure you won’t forget.

Kashmir Winter Trek: Marchoi Valley Trek

The Marchoi Valley Trek is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Kashmir. Known for its stunning landscapes, serene lakes, and vibrant meadows, this trek offers a unique experience, especially in the winter months. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty with a touch of tranquility, this trek is perfect for you. Starting from the popular hill station Naranag, the trail follows ancient routes taken by the Gujjars, the nomadic shepherds of Kashmir.

Every day on the trail, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of rugged snow-capped mountains, colorful grasslands, and trout-filled crystal clear streams. Indeed, words cannot describe the beauty of the Marchoi Valley. It is a different world altogether, with frozen waterfalls and a blanket of snow, making the experience mystical. Furthermore, the penultimate day of trekking is spent hiking to Shadimarg, the highest point of the trek at around 2600 meters in altitude.

Itinerary Overview:

  • Day 1: Arrival at Srinagar and overnight in a hotel.
  • Day 2: Drive from Srinagar to Naranag & trek from Naranag village to Dumail (2 hrs) to set up base camp.
  • Day 3: Trek from Dumail to Marchoi Valley via Shingdi and back to Dumail (6 hrs).
  • Day 4: Trek to Shadimarg Top.
  • Day 5: Trek from Dumail to Naranag (2 hrs) and drive to Srinagar.
  • Day 6: Fly out of Srinagar.

Best Time to Visit:

While the Marchoi Valley Trek is accessible year-round, if you wish to embark upon it for a winter adventure, December to February is an enchanting time to explore. Consequently, the valley transforms into a winter wonderland, with snow-capped peaks and glistening frozen lakes. The best months for this trek are January and February when the snowfall creates a magical atmosphere. However, given the current circumstances with changes in weather and delays in snowfall, it is recommended to keep a slightly flexible schedule.

Adventure Pulse Campsites:

As you land in Srinagar, you will spend your first night in a hotel in Rajbagh or around the vicinity. The next day, the team will drive to Naranag, the start point of the trek. Our campsite will include:

  1. Sleeping Area: Comprising sleeping tents arranged for comfort.
  2. Dining Area: A dining tent with stools and tables for hot meals, lit by solar lights at night for a cozy atmosphere.
  3. Kitchen Area: Where our cook and helpers will prepare daily hot meals.
  4. Toilet Facilities: Set up at a distance from the dining and sleeping areas for convenience.

How Will I Sleep During the Marchoi Valley Trek?

While on the trek, you will stay in comfortable alpine dome-shaped tents. We at Adventure Pulse provide a 3-man tent for two people. If you wish to stay in a single tent, we can arrange that at an added cost. Each tent is lined with foam for insulation, topped with a sleeping mat and a thick sleeping bag to ensure you get a good night’s rest, ready for your next day of adventure.

What About the Toilets?

As part of our services, we provide a toilet tent with a flushable loo. After the porters reach the next campsite, they will set up the loos away from running water. Each toilet tent will be equipped with sanitizing sprays, toilet paper, and waste packets.

What Will I Be Carrying While on the Marchoi Valley Trek?

For a list of items to carry on the trek, refer to our recommended checklist. Your personal bags will be loaded on mules, and you’ll carry a small daypack with essentials like a light jacket, windcheater/raincoat, water, and your packed lunch.

Meals Served During the Course of the Winter Trek:

We at Adventure Pulse pride ourselves on the quality logistics we provide for our clients. Proper nutrition is key for enjoying the trek and staying healthy. Our diverse menu includes rice, roti, sabzi, different types of daal, and khichdi for packed lunches, along with options for hot breakfast and dinner.

Adventure Pulse Support Staff:

Each group will have a lead guide and numerous assistant guides. The guide’s responsibility is to keep you safe and ensure the group follows the right route at the right pace. Along with the guides, you will also be accompanied by a cook, who will prepare all the meals.

Who is this Trek For?

The Marchoi Valley Trek, popularly known as the Kashmir winter trek, is beginner-friendly and suitable for amateurs and first-time trekkers. Having prior trekking or camping experience is not necessary. The daily distances of the trek are approximately between 3 to 6 km, making it very doable.

Moreover, the maximum altitude of the trek is only 2600 meters, making it an apt choice for beginners as acclimatization is not an issue. The main challenge is adapting to the Kashmir winter temperatures, especially at night, so having the right gear is essential for comfort.
