CLIMBING MENTOK KANGRI: A Journey with Adventure Pulse

by Laveena Manwani / Wednesday, 06 November 2024 / Published in Ladakh, Climbing Expeditions

As I precariously balance on the steep, snow-covered shoulder of Mentok Kangri, watching the first light of dawn break over the horizon, a single thought crosses my mind: “Why do I do this to myself?”

It’s a question I revisit each time I’m drawn back to the mountains. Yet, the allure of Mentok Kangri, a formidable 6,310-meter peak in the Ladakh region of India, keeps pulling me back. This journey, while daunting, offers unmatched beauty and an opportunity to test resilience — and it’s a climb I invite others to join through Adventure Pulse.

DAY ONE: Arriving in Leh, Ladakh — To Fly or Drive?

Arriving in Leh, Ladakh, each year for my climb brings mixed emotions. Leh, sitting at an altitude of 3,400 meters, is as breathtaking as it is physically challenging. “Should you fly to Leh?” This question often sparks debate among mountaineers and trekkers. While some prefer to drive to aid acclimatization, I’ve always flown, avoiding the unpredictable mountain roads and keeping my energy focused on the climb ahead. However, flying means an immediate altitude gain that requires caution.

Once in Leh, it’s essential to acclimate. I limit my activity, staying hydrated and resting. A gentle exploration on Day Two lets me enjoy the unique sights Leh has to offer, from the bustling Main Market to local treasures like Hemis Monastery, Shey Palace, the Hall of Fame, and Magnetic Hill. For those feeling particularly adventurous, a visit to the Sangam where the Indus and Zanskar Rivers meet is a humbling sight, where nature’s raw power meets in a spectacular confluence.

I once met a couple who came to Leh for their honeymoon, only to end up severely altitude sick. They left within 24 hours. It’s a lesson that underscores the need to respect the mountain’s pace and be mindful of our bodies at high altitudes.

MENTOK KANGRI: The Expedition Begins

Mentok Kangri, often referred to as simply “Mentok,” is more than a climb; it’s a spiritual journey into Ladakh’s heart. Rising at 6,310 meters (20,702 ft), this towering peak is woven into the fabric of Ladakh’s heritage. For the people of Ladakh, Mentok is a revered guardian, a symbol of resilience.

On Day Three, our team departed from Leh, transporting our expedition gear and setting out on the winding NH1 road. After five hours of scenic driving, we arrived at Karzok village, situated beside the dazzling blue waters of Tso Moriri Lake. As we set up camp, the sight of the lake felt like a blessing, its shimmering turquoise waters contrasting against the arid landscape of Ladakh.

Our crew, led by Kunzang, included Tashi, our cook, or as he humorously calls himself, the “Stomach Engineer.” Tashi’s cooking is more than just sustenance — it’s a spirit-lifter in the cold wilderness, his meals a mix of Ladakhi warmth and rich flavors that fuel us for the tough days ahead.

THE TREK: To Base Camp

The next day, we began the trek to Mentok Kangri Base Camp. As the landscape unfolded, it was an artist’s palette of nature’s elements: the bright blue skies, the earthy tones of the hills, and the looming snow-capped peaks. However, I must warn future climbers — the trek to Base Camp demands patience and perseverance. Each step takes you deeper into an unchanging landscape, and the harshness of the environment can wear on the spirit, especially in bad weather when clouds cast everything in a gray shadow.

It is in these stark moments that the camaraderie of mountaineering teams becomes invaluable. The shared struggle builds a bond, a silent understanding that we are in this together, moving as one. Base Camp, our temporary home, is where we recharge, checking equipment and mentally preparing for the ascent.

THE CLIMB: Ascent to High Camp

The journey from Base Camp to High Camp was grueling, testing every ounce of endurance we had. The altitude weighed heavily, and each breath felt harder to come by. Every step was a reminder of the commitment it takes to reach Mentok’s summit. Our movements slowed as we reached higher altitudes, and the temperature dropped, with gusts of icy wind penetrating even our thickest layers.

When we finally arrived at High Camp, the sense of relief and achievement was immense. The team set up camp in harmony, each person understanding their role. A hot meal prepared by Tashi felt like a miracle, restoring both body and spirit. Under a clear, star-filled sky, the peak above us seemed closer, almost within reach, yet still daunting in its silent majesty.

THE SUMMIT PUSH: The Final Ascent

At 3 a.m., we began the final summit push. The world was veiled in a shadowy blue as we climbed under the starlight, headlamps casting a narrow path through the snow and ice. Every breath felt labored, every step a monumental effort. We battled both physical and mental fatigue, pushing forward even as doubt crept into our minds.

When the sun finally began to rise, casting a warm glow over the icy peaks, we knew we were close. Standing on the summit of Mentok Kangri was nothing short of surreal. At 6,310 meters, the endless panorama of peaks and glaciers stretching below us was humbling. The effort, the struggle, all melted away in that single, breathtaking moment. A brief glance among the team said it all — we had made it.

THE DESCENT: Navigating the Journey Back

The descent from Mentok Kangri, though often underestimated, was challenging in its own right. Every step down required intense concentration, as fatigue and adrenaline wane, leaving you vulnerable to missteps. The steep, icy slopes kept us alert, each step bringing us closer to Base Camp.

Finally reaching Base Camp, exhausted yet exhilarated, we embraced a new appreciation for the accomplishment. The descent is often where we test our endurance and caution. Tashi’s hot tea at camp tasted like pure revival, signaling the end of our journey’s most arduous phase.

REFLECTIONS: Why We Climb

Reflecting on Mentok Kangri, I return to that initial question: Why do we do this? There is no single answer. The challenge, the beauty, and the sheer scale of these mountains pull us back. For me, standing on the summit offered a glimpse of clarity, a reminder of resilience and the strength that lies within. Every climb leaves a part of itself within you, shaping your spirit and reshaping your perspective.
