Hike to the backwaters of Bhira Dam through the blooming landscape of Tamhini Ghat!

Andharban Forest Trek Overview:

The name “Andharban” comes from Andhar, meaning “dark”, and ban, which means ‘forest’. Literally the ‘dark forest’, Andharban is a trail through dense overgrowth, with beautiful views of the Devkund waterfall, and Kundalika valley along the way. The foliage on this trek is pierced with several, streams and waterfalls, and beginning at 2160 ft, one descends into the lush green wilderness of Tamhini Ghat towards the backwaters of the Bhira Dam!

A perfect one-day outing for both amateurs and experienced trekkers, the Andharban Forest Trek lies in the heart of the Sahyadris and is a must-do—especially during the monsoon. As the rains arrive, a spooky mist promptly descends into the jungle, engulfing the path and dimming visibility. Stretching over 13 kilometers from the village of Pimpri in the Tamhini Ghat to its terminus at Bhira Dam, the trail winds through rolling terrain with a mostly gradual descent, making it an ideal choice for safely introducing children to the outdoors.

Immersing yourself in the soothing sounds of gently flowing rivulets, bubbling waterfalls, and a thick jungle teeming with diverse flora and birds—like the chaatak (Jacobin cuckoo), dwarf kingfisher, and the Malabar whistling thrush—is a welcome escape from today’s digital age for kids and adults alike, making the Andharban Forest Trek a refreshing and delightful experience.

The Andharban Forest Trek is a moderately graded trek near Pune, covering a distance of around 13 kms. The trek begins at an elevation of 2160 feet and through gradually descending trails ends near the backwaters of the Bhira dam. For most parts, the trail is relatively flat with occasional ascents and descents on a well-defined and visible route. When trekking during the monsoon, the trail could be slippery. Depending on the amount of rain , expect to cross small streams. The last stretch has a relatively steeper descent on a slippery trail with a few steps.

While not technically demanding, the trek is long (13kms) and is generally covered in anywhere between 4-6 hours. We recommend fit beginners, first-time trekkers and families to embark on this adventure!

Major Attractions:

  • Kundalika Valley Views – Stunning viewpoints along the trail overlook the dramatic Kundalika Valley, especially striking during the monsoon.

You can also trek through Andharban during the winter months to gain a diverse experience of the same trail with a dry landscape, cool sunrises and vivid sunsets!

Important Points to Note on the Andharban Trek:

  • There are no designated water sources on the trail apart from the streams and waterfalls you cross. As a precautionary measure, it’s recommended to carry 2L of water at least.
  • Although the trail is very well marked, it’s important to understand that it passes through a thick jungle and first timers should not undertake the trek solo to avoid wandering into the neighbouring Kundalika valley. This adventure can safely be planned with a group or your family.
  • In the monsoon, watch out for leeches. We suggest you wear full-sleeved or full-length clothes.
