Where is Mount Kilimanjaro?

Mt. Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, near the Kenyan border in Africa.

Fun Fact: Did you know? It is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the tallest in Africa, rising to 5,895 meters (19,341 ft)

What are the popular Trekking Routes on Mt. Kilimanjaro?

There are total 7 established trekking routes on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Each routes varies in terms of the distance, difficulty, altitude gain as well as the terrain. Some of the most frequently used routes are:

Machame Route

Machame is one of the most popular and scenic trekking route on Kilimanjaro. This route is preferred by trekkers who want to gradually gain altitude in order to allow better acclimatization. Thus, increasing the chances of a safe summit to the top at Uhuru Peak. This route is recommended for fit beginners as well as experienced trekkers.

Lemosho Route

Lemosho route is also consider as a challenging trekking route on Kilimanjaro. Lemosho route is considered great for acclimatization and is known for the scenic views.

Marangu Route

The Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro is Moderate in terms of the difficulty levels. It is also one of the fastest route to climb Kilimanjaro and has hut accommodation available.

Rongai Route

Trekkers wanted to approach climbing Kilimanjaro from the Northern side can consider the Rongai Route. However, this route is very quiet and dry compared to other routes on Kilimanjaro. The relatively easy terrain makes it a Moderate level trek.

Umbwe Route

One of the less recommended routes on Kilimanjaro is Umbwe Route. This one is only for experienced trekkers due to it very steep and short ascent that requires extremely good fitness levels.

Northern Circuit Route:

The longest route on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit Route (98 km) offers the best acclimatization and highest success rate.

Kilimanjaro over the last 15 years, we strongly recommend the Machame Route for your Kilimanjaro Trek. Machame Route on Kilimanjaro offers diverse landscapes and gradual ascent on the mountain.

What is the Total Trekking Distance on the Kilimanjaro trek?

The total trek distance on the Kilimanjaro Trek varies by the route one chooses.  It varies from 53 km (on Umbwe Route)  to 98 km (on the Northern Circuit Route). It usually takes around 6 to 9 days, depending on the route and acclimatization strategy.

What is the expected Temperature & Climate on Kilimanjaro Trek?

Base: Tropical warmth (20–30°C)
Mid-altitude: Misty cloud forests (10–15°C)
Summit: Freezing conditions (-10°C to -20°C)
On the Machame Route, you’ll experience five ecological zones, from rainforest to arctic desert. It is almost like walking through nature’s different mood swings.

How Difficult is Kilimanjaro Trek?

Despite being one of the Seven Summits and highest mountain in the South African continent, Kilimanjaro is considered a Moderate to Difficult climb. While acclimatizing to high altitude and working on endurance is the key to success,  it doesn’t require any technical climbing skills. The trek includes thrilling sections like the famous Barranco Wall, which adds a dash of adventure.

What is a best time to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro?

Best Time to Trek Kilimanjaro is January to March and June to October, when weather conditions are usually ideal.
These months typically offer clear skies, mild temperatures and lower rainfall. However, the weather on Kilimanjaro is extremely unpredictable.

What makes Kilimanjaro trek Special?

– One of the Seven Summits – the highest peaks on each continent.
– Known as the “Roof of Africa”, it offers surreal sunsets, starry nights, and a chance to walk through wildly contrasting landscapes.

Kilimanjaro – meaning behind the name: 

The name “Kilimanjaro” translates to “Mountain of Whiteness” or “Shining Mountain”. It’s believed to be a combination of the Swahili word “kilima” (meaning mountain) and a word from the local Chagga language, “njaro,” which means “whiteness” or “shining”.

As you enter the Machame gate which is the start point of the trek, you will be surprised to see the lush green vegetation around. With huge trees as high as 20-25 meters and vibrant flowers, the trail looks colorful and straight out of a mystical world!

Stunning campsites on the Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek.

Camping on Mt. Kilimanjaro is a whole different experience. You will sleep in warm, comfortable tents in pretty campsites surrounded by magnificent landscapes. Most campsites have a very beautifully planted wooden sign boards that have some facts and figures mentioned on them. These sign board not only provides some useful information about the place but also make for a perfect photobooth for trekkers.

As you reach the higher camps, you enter into the alpine and moorland areas of Kilimanjaro particularly between 2800 M to 4000 M. You will surprised to see trees as tall as 30 feet, which resembles to giant cactus. These unique trees found on Kilimanjaro are actually giant groundsel, which is a flowering plant. These plants survive harshest of weather conditions on the mountain.

If you love the night sky and are nerd about stargazing, then Kilimanjaro trek offers the perfect opportunity to witness the magic. The remoteness of Kilimanjaro and no light pollution around means you can get to see beautiful night sky studded with stars. As Kilimanjaro a free-standing mountain, on a clear night you can see the vast expanse of the night sky with milky way, shooting stars, constellations and satellites adding to the magic! Trekking during the full moon phase is also a magical experience as you can see the mountain top illuminated with the light.

Magnificent Sunrise and Sunsets on Kilimanjaro.

One of the most memorable experiences one can get on Kilimanjaro is to witness the sky turning into gold during the magical golden hours of sunrise and sunset. While you get the stunning views from most of the campsites, some campsites are better situated than others particularly the Shira camp and Karanga camp. For the summit night, trekkers usually start at midnight in order to reach the Uhuru Peak summit at the dawn of the day. Seeing the first rays of the sunlight hitting the mighty peak of Kilimanjaro is an experience very hard to describe in words.

Sunsets on Kilimanjaro are a magical experience too. As you end your long and tiring day, sipping a hot coffee and admiring the glorious sunset with fellow trekkers, the moments become even more special and a core memory that you can take back with you forever!

Massive glaciers on Mt. Kilimanjaro

One surprising fact about Mt. Kilimanjaro is that it has several massive glaciers on it. Some of the popular glaciers are Furtwangler, Rebmann, Credner and Northern Ice Field. These glaciers are believed to be formed at the end of last ice age.

Due to global warming, the glaciers on Kilimanjaro are melting rapidly and have shrunk almost 85% since 1900. Scientists have predicted that these glaciers might completely disappear by 2050.

On the roof of Africa!

On the trek you will find countless viewpoints that reward trekkers with some stunning panoramic views of Africa. From the summit of Kilimanjaro, you can even observe the curvature of the planet. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the plains of the Masai-Mara, in Kenya.

A challenging yet rewarding summit climb!

While there are no technical sections on the summit climb to Uhuru Peak, it’s a long and tiring push from the Barafu Camp. Trekkers usually leave for the summit push around midnight making their way between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Once you reach the Stell Point, depending on the weather condition you might encounter a good amount of snow, all the wat till the Summit. The temperatures are freezing and every step feels difficult due to the altitude as you are above 5000 meters. However, the views and the sense of accomplishment one gets at the Kilimanjaro Summit is worth all the struggle.
