Trekking in the Sahyadris
The Sahyadris offer a vast range of trails, and the landscape between Pune & Mumbai stands out as one of the most popular hiking & trekking destinations. From famous forts to monsoon trails to outdoor rock climbing, the Western Ghats provide a place to fulfil anyone’s adventure quotient. These Ghats also make a great training program for those aspiring for high-altitude treks & climbs. However, today, we will focus on a famous, beautiful monsoon trek near Pune—the Andharban Trek.

Andharban Trek
Overview
The Andharban trek sits over a plateau overlooking a large valley called Kundalika valley, made up of interesting rocky formations. The view of Kundalika Valley reminds me of the Grand Canyon whenever I go there. Being in the wild doesn’t mean you’re in for a rough adventure. Interestingly, the Andharban trek offers a soothing trail, as most of the route goes through the Andharban forest, with occasional peaks into the valley below. This makes it a beautiful sight for photographers and trekking enthusiasts alike. The rainy season is the best time to visit the Andharban Jungle as the hills beside it offer a lush green view of the forests and valleys. The monsoon or post-monsoon season provides the best opportunity to visit the Andharban Trek because you will see so many waterfalls and streams along the trail and may even find some natural ponds.
The trail follows a simple dirt track that leads you into the forest and sometimes brings you to vast grass fields. Famous in the monsoons, the Andharban offers a view of continuous waterfalls and rivulets that fall along the path. One will also find a plunge pool at the base of some waterfalls—a place loved by Aquaphiles. A dip on the return offers a truly satisfying experience, giving you a chance to experience nature at its best.
Location of the Trek
The Andharban trek starts about 70 kilometres from Pune central and 130 kilometres from the city of Mumbai. Andharban Forest sits at the start of the Konkan range. The road trip to the Andharban trek winds through the valleys of the Mulshi taluka and offers a beautiful sight leading to the gateway of the Konkan region. You will also drive alongside the blue waters of Mulshi Lake, a mesmerizing sight that remains rare so close to a busy city like Pune. The trek starts at Independence Point near Pimpari Village and ends near the backwaters of Bhira Dam. It is best to leave early in the morning, as the entire drive from Pune to the Andharban Trek start point will take 2-3 hours for a one-way journey. Returning before night sets in is always advantageous. It is also advisable not to go on your first trek without a guide or group. You could easily get lost in the forest, especially on the way back to the starting point.
Duration of the Trek
The entire trek usually takes 5-6 hours on average, with quick breaks. However, being with an enthusiastic group makes the hours feel like minutes, making the trek much easier than expected or if done alone.
Fitness Level Required
A basic level of fitness is sufficient, as it is a simple walk through the forest. However, some stamina is needed, as you must walk for at least 5 hours in total. Climbing up the stairs of a tall building is an easy way to build stamina, and you can practice at home. The Andharban Trek also suits beginners who want to start hiking or trekking. It is also important to keep sipping water to avoid dehydration and fatigue.
2 Ways to Do the Andharban Trek
The entire route of the Andharban trek starts at a village named Pimpari and ends at the backwaters of Bhira Dam. The trek starts with a forest and opens up onto a large grass field halfway through the trek. Afterward, you pass through a village, descend the hill, and reach the finishing point near the dam.
Alternatively, you can make the trek a loop track. Start at the same base village, Pimpari, and return from halfway, near the vast grass fields. You will witness a change in landscape after walking through the forest. This place also offers a good spot for a lunch break, after which you can head back to the start point. Taking the return journey on the same route saves you from arranging separate transport at both the start and end points, and it also reduces some of the return travel time.
What to Carry
- 20-30 litre backpack: Make sure the bag is comfortable for long durations of walking. Also, bring a rain cover for the bag or waterproof your belongings with plastic bags.
- 2-3 litres of water: Keep yourself hydrated during the long trek.
- Energy bars or trail snacks: Keep your energy levels high during the trek.
- Rainwear: Full rain gear is essential as the trek is most suitable for the rains.
- Swimming trunks & towel
- Trekking or hiking shoes (preferably waterproof for the rain)
- Mosquito repellent: A must to keep away flying insects.
- Avoid wearing shorts as it is a jungle, and insects can be everywhere.
Parting Thoughts
The Andharban Trek offers a completely different experience in terms of terrain and views. It has personally earned a top place on my bucket list, as it offers a beautiful hike through a dense forest trail, unlike many others around the city. Another advantage is that the Andharban Trek meets all the criteria: it’s close to Pune, it’s a trek that can be completed home to home between 6:00 am – 6:00 pm, and it offers beautiful forest-like views and flora that are a treat to the eyes! If you are looking for an easy-to-moderate level trek close to the city that can be completed in a day, the Andharban Trek is your answer! It’s a getaway that provides a much-needed break from your chaotic life and schedule!
Considering all the reasons above, I have been to the Andharban Trek three times, and I’m definitely looking forward to another opportunity.

Aside from Andharban, the Sahyadris are filled with many more trails like Katraj to Sinhagad, Irshalgad, Katraj to Bopdev Ghat, Aadrai Jungle, fort treks like Vichitragad etc and I hope I can continue exploring all the beautiful trails the Sahyadris have to offer.
