Climbing in India

The Indian Himalayas are home to stunning landscapes ranging from lush meadows to rugged cold deserts. India as a country is among those nations that is blessed with all kinds of terrain from tropical to rain forests, from snow clad to hot deserts. This varied landscape all over various regions in the country makes it a very interesting place for adventure enthusiasts. From the mountainous landscapes in the North to the lush greenery down south and the deserts along the western part, India is among the adventure capitals and rightly so. The country homes various trekking destinations in its huge land mass including some of the most popular trails in Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and more. However, it is not just limited to trekking adventures. India offers many climbing peaks including some tall mammoths as well. Some of the 7000+ meter climbing peaks in India are Mount Kun, Mount Nun, Apsaras II, Plateau Peak, Saser Kangri I etc.

Does this mean that India is not suitable for first time climbers or beginners? Absolutely not! Along with these giants, the country also has 6000 meter peaks that are perfect for first time climbers who are looking to transition from trekking to mountaineering.

In this blog we shall discuss some of the best climbing peaks for beginners in India.

1. Kang Yatse 2, Ladakh

  • Max Elevation: 6250 Meters | 20,505 Feet
  • Total Duration: 10 Days
  • Level: Difficult
  • Start and End Point – Leh
  • Valley – Markha Valley
  • Season – July to September
  • Accommodation – Hotel + Camping
  • Network – Not available

About the Climb

Kang Yatse 2, situated in the Markha region, offers an unforgettable experience for mountaineers. Its climb presents a challenge but rewards those who dare with an exhilarating ascent. Kang Yatse is a dual-summit peak, consisting of Kang Yatse 1 (6400 meters) and Kang Yatse II (6250 meters). While both peaks offer significant challenges, Kang Yatse 2 is considered slightly less technically demanding than its taller counterpart. Kang Yatse 2 among other climbing peaks, serves as a great introduction to high-altitude mountaineering for those ready to push their limits.

The journey to Kang Yatse 2 offers an exciting opportunity for trekkers to transition into mountaineering, especially for those attempting their first 6000-meter climb. The journey to Kang yatse 2 takes you through the beautiful valley of Markha which also popularly embodies the trekking route as well.

Can a beginner climb Kang Yatse 2?

Absolutely! With the right preparation, physical fitness, and guidance, a beginner can climb Kang Yatse 2. Kang Yatse 2 is considered to be among the best peaks for beginners to climb in India. As a semi-technical climb, it is a perfect introduction to Himalayan mountaineering. For those looking to experience the beauty of the Himalayas without needing advanced mountaineering skills, Kang Yatse 2 offers a manageable and unforgettable adventure.

Though a beginner friendly climb, we highly recommend you not to underestimate this expedition. This journey will surely test you both physically and mentally. With appropriate physical preparation, including cardiovascular routines, strength training, building endurance and hiking with a loaded backpack, first-timers can successfully summit the peak. Furthermore, we recommend you to climb keeping your safety at the top most priority – climb with a reputed organization, invest in good gear and follow the rule of acclimatization.

2. Mount Dzo Jongo, Ladakh

  • Max Elevation: 6218 Meters | 20,472 Feet
  • Total Duration: 10 Days
  • Level: Difficult
  • Start and End Point – Leh
  • Valley – Markha Valley
  • Season – July to September
  • Accommodation – Hotel + Camping
  • Network – Not available

About Mount Dzo Zongo

Dzo Jongo towering high at 6128 meters is a semi-technical climb which is not very frequent. Its located not very far from Nimaling and is an excellent option for climbers wanting to climb a less crowded 6000-meter peak. Dzo Jongo peak is also located in the Markha Valley, beside Kang Yatse. It is Kang Yatse’s lesser known cousin. This 6000m peak is one of the hidden peaks which start from Nimaling and attracts far less crowds than what Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse draw.

Similar to Kang Yatse, Dzo Jongo has two summits. This peak is quite an exhilarating and manageable experience and we would highly recommend this peak to anyone wanting to make a transition from trekking to climbing. Besides, it gives you the rare opportunity to experience a true climbing adventure.

Can a beginner climb Dzo Jongo?

Yes! With the right preparation, physical fitness, and guidance, a beginner can summit Dzo Jongo. Like Kang Yatse 2, Dzo Jongo too, is a semi-technical climb, it is a perfect introduction to Himalayan mountaineering. It does not require climbers to have advanced mountaineering skills.

Again, though Dzo Jongo is a beginner friendly climbing peak, appropriate physical preparation is a must if climbers wish to make their experience manageable. Lack of preparation will lead to unnecessary worry and physical torture making it an unpleasant journey. Furthermore, as always we recommend you to climb keeping your safety at the top most priority – climb with a reputed organization, invest in good gear and follow the rule of acclimatization.

3. Friendship Peak, Himachal Pradesh

  • Max Elevation: 5289 Meters | 17,352 Feet
  • Total Duration: 7 to 9 Days
  • Level: Moderate to Difficult
  • Start and End Point – Himachal
  • Valley – Kullu District
  • Season – May – June | September – October
  • Accommodation – Hotel + Camping
  • Network – Fluctuating

About Friendship Peak

Friendship Peak is a popular mountain located in the Karakoram range, situated in the Kullu district of Himachal. It stands at an impressive elevation of 5289 meters and is renowned for its breathtaking views and challenging climbs. The peak is often sought after by mountaineers and trekkers, offering a blend of non technical climbing and alpine adventure.

The trek to the peak is considered to be among the best options for those with no mountaineering experience. The journey to Friendship Peak is not only about conquering the summit but also about appreciating the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, including glaciers, rocky terrains, and lush valleys.

Can a beginner climb Friendship Peak?

Friendship Peak is among the best options to climb for beginners. Since its altitude is lower than 5500 meters, it becomes a very accessible climb and can be done with ease. This expedition will help first time climbers boost confidence in themselves and prepare them for their higher climbs.

However, since Friendship Peak is a trekking peak and does not require any climbing/technical equipment as such, it doesn’t really train trekkers for the same. But it can be a good choice for those who wish to push themselves from trekking and take a step further towards climbing and more difficult terrain. Nevertheless despite the above, this expedition to Friendship peak requires climbers to be in excellent shape.

4. Yunam Peak

  • Max Elevation: 6150 Meters | 20,177 Feet
  • Total Duration: 8 to 9 Days
  • Level: Difficult
  • Start and End Point – Himachal Pradesh
  • Valley – Manali
  • Season – July to September
  • Accommodation – Hotel + Camping
  • Network – Fluctuating

About Yunam Peak

Yunam Peak, located in Himachal Pradesh, stands at an elevation of 6,150 meters and is one of the prominent peaks in the Zanskar Range. Known for its breathtaking beauty and challenging terrain, Yunam attracts adventure enthusiasts and mountaineers seeking a unique experience in the remote Himalayan region. The trek to Yunam Peak offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, and serene valleys, making it a sought-after destination for those looking to escape the crowds.

The ascent to the summit is demanding, requiring technical climbing skills and proper acclimatization, but it rewards climbers with a sense of accomplishment and unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Yunam Peak remains a hidden gem in Himachal Pradesh, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and adventure.

Can a beginner climb Yunam Peak?

While Yunam Peak is an attractive destination for mountaineers, it is generally not recommended for beginners due to its technical nature and high altitude. The trek to the summit involves challenging terrains, including steep ascents, icy conditions, and the need for mountaineering skills such as ice axe and crampon use. Additionally, the altitude of over 6,000 meters increases the risk of altitude sickness, requiring proper acclimatization.

While it may be possible for beginners with a good level of fitness and some prior trekking or climbing experience, it is advisable to undertake climbing this peak with experienced guides, undergo proper training, and ensure acclimatization before attempting such a challenging ascent. For beginners, it’s often better to start with lower-altitude treks and easier climbs to build experience before tackling more technical peaks like Yunam.

5. Kang Yatse 1, Ladakh

  • Max Elevation: 6400 Meters |  Feet
  • Total Duration: 13 Days
  • Level: Difficult
  • Start and End Point – Leh
  • Valley – Markha Valley
  • Season – July to September
  • Accommodation – Hotel + Camping
  • Network – Not available

About Kang Yatse 1

Kang Yatse in Ladakh is a prominent peak in the Markha region of Ladakh, which has two summits: Kang Yatse 1 and Kang Yatse 2. The first summit, Kang Yatse 1, stands at an impressive 6400 meters, while the second summit, Kang Yatse 2, also reaches 6250 meters above sea level.

While both summits are at the same altitude, Kang Yatse 1 is technically more challenging. This makes it a more difficult ascent for climbers. Kang Yatse 1, is a dream climb for many adventurers. It is especially appealing for those who have some experience of mountaineering and are looking forward to more. This climb demands excellent physical fitness, as only the fittest climbers can even attempt it.

Can a beginner climb Kang Yatse 1?

It is not recommended for novice climbers to attempt Kang Yatse 1. This expedition requires climbers to have a solid understanding of climbing equipment and techniques. Moreover, the steep ascent and descent require sufficient experience in navigating challenging terrains.

Given the altitude exceeds 6000 meters and the extreme temperatures, beginners should reconsider attempting this climb. To build the necessary experience and physical fitness, we recommend climbing other peaks like Kang Yatse 2, Dzo Jongo, Yunam peak etc. Climbing these peaks will help prepare you both physically and mentally for Kang Yatse 1. However, for those who wish to push themselves further or have good rock climbing and ice climbing experience can consider climbing Kang Yatse 1 with the necessary training.

To know about Kang Yatse we recommend you to read the Ultimate Climbing Guide to Kang Yatse 1 on our website.

Parting Thoughts

Among the various climbing peaks we have discussed in this blog, you can choose what suits you the best. Remember, any peak you opt for will require excellent levels of physical fitness and will test your mind space as well as your determination. In order to ensure that you are prepared for this, we highly recommend you to train at least 3 to 4 months in prior of your expedition and build up your endurance and stamina.

Furthermore, we cannot lay enough stress on how important your operator is. It is incredibly necessary to have a team that is equipped technically as well as has enough labor and logistics in place. Mountains are harsh, and they can be harsher on these climbs, your safety cannot be a compromise. Secondly, invest in good gear (purchase or rental) and stay motivated to make it to the top but more importantly remember “Summit is optional, descent is mandatory”.
