Winter Climbing Workshop

Overview

Adventure Pulse is extremely excited to Invite you for the exclusive “WINTER CLIMBING WORKSHOP”. A one of its kind workshop conducted by two Everest Summiteers in the Majestic and Icy terrain of Ladakh. The aim of the workshop is to provide practical and theoretical knowledge of the two most important disciplines of mountaineering – Rock Climbing & Ice Climbing.

Interest and awareness in Mountain Climbing has recently increased amongst today’s Adventure enthusiasts. The ‘Winter Climbing Workshop’ is our endeavor to guide our ever growing Adventure Pulse family from High Altitude Treks to being part of Mountain Expeditions, to face the challenges of the terrain, the cold, high altitude and finally to experience the thrill of standing on the summit.

The Workshop is set in the beautiful landscape of Ladakh, located in the North of India. In the winter months, this cold desert provides some incredible features such as frozen waterfalls and iced ponds. The high altitude and subzero temperatures create a perfect simulation of conditions found in climbing expeditions, while the city of Leh also enables some comfort with availability of hotel accommodations and the opportunity to experience Ladakhi Culture in the off season.

8. WHAT IS ACCLIMATIZATION?

- Acclimatisation is nothing but adjusting to the weather and the altitude. Acclimatization is something which is very important before the workshop as Leh is situated at a significant height and coming from a Metro City into Leh can trigger AMS for most people. So it’s extremely important to drink lots of water after arriving in Leh. Since acclimatization is a big factor in Leh and for the participants to have a smooth workshop we dedicate the first two days adjusting to the weather. We do that by exploring the local area and doing hikes around Leh.

9. WHAT IS THE BEST TIME FOR THE WINTER CLIMBING WORKSHOP?

The best time for the Winter Climbing Workshop is in the month of January because that’s when the temperatures in Leh drop down to it’s lowest hence freezing the waterfalls turning them into ice. These ice waterfalls thus become climbing walls for Ice Climbers.

The Winter Climbing Workshop is an adventure where you need to be in good physical condition before you start the trek. Your body should be able to bear extreme cold caused by the subzero temperatures which can even drop down to as low as – 10 Degrees Celsius. You must be able to brisk walk / slow jog for 4 – 5 km before the trek starts. This makes your lungs strong and gives it ability to process less air for more work. It also helps the body to acclimatize better to the cold and low oxygen levels. Having taken several batches for the Winter Climbing Workshop and many other high altitude treks, here’s what we recommend you to follow in order to get fit for the trek. Although no prior climbing experience is required for the Winter Climbing Workshop, you need to build your endurance levels before the workshop.
We recommend the following schedule to the participants
  1. WEEK 1/2: Develop a habit of getting up early in the morning and run / brisk walk for minimum 2 – 3 km, at least 3 – 4 days a week. This would represent 20 – 25 minutes of cardio. Also avoid taking elevators and start using the stairs instead. To start with, climb 3 – 4 floors each day to make your thigh muscles strong. If running is not your thing, you can cycle for about 30 minutes or swim for about 500 m, at least 4 times a week.

  2. WEEK 3/4: Being consistent with your exercise during week 1 and 2, increase your distance to 4 – 5 km and 5 times a week. You can also start with interval training which is a method of training the cardiovascular system by elevating the heart rate significantly and then allowing it to recover for a period before elevating it again. Ex. You may sprint to push your heart rate, then walk to allow it to calm down before starting the sprint again.

  3. WEEK 5/6: Strength & Endurance. After successfully following the schedule for the first 4 weeks, Just be consistent with your work out and increase the intensity slowly.

Consistency is the key. If you follow the above schedule thoroughly; you will be able to acclimatize better while at high altitude. Each and every time you go to a mountain, you must have the physical fitness to better enjoy the experience.
