This trek is recommended for all kinds of trekkers - from first timers in the outdoors to experienced trekkers looking for a quick adventure. It can also be taken up by children 7 years and older, with prior experience hiking or even those being introduced to the wild!
Tung Fort (also known as Kathingad) is located near Lonavala, in the Maval Region of the Pune district.
It is situated on a hill overlooking Pawna Lake and is part of the Sahyadris/Western Ghats.
The trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. Though it is a relatively short trek (1–1.5 hours to the top), the trail is steep and narrow at parts, especially near the summit. It's best suited for fit beginners or experienced trekkers.
The ideal time to visit is during or post-monsoon when the weather is cool, the surroundings are lush green, and the visibility is great! Monsoon treks are scenic but slippery, while summers can be hot and dehydrating. Winter is also a great time due to the chilly weather and clear views!
You can reach the base village Tungwadi via:
By road: From Pune or Lonavala, drive towards Pavana Dam and then to Tungwadi village.
Nearest railway station: Lonavala, from where local transport (taxi/private vehicles) can be hired.
At Adventure Pulse, we organize a cozy, traveller style mini-bus to Tungwadi.
The main attractions of Tung Fort include its steep, conical peak, panoramic views of Pawna Lake, a small Ganpati temple at the top, and ruins of old fort walls and gates. From the summit, you can also see nearby forts like Lohagad, Visapur, and Tikona. The trail is especially scenic post-monsoon with lush greenery all around.
As of now, no entry fee or special permissions are required for the Tung Fort trek. However, it’s good practice to inform locals at the base village and check for any forest regulations, especially during the monsoon.
