Unveiling the breath-taking tapestry of Alpine Lakes!

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is known for its breath-taking scenery and often referred to as the most beautiful trek in India. The meadows are often compared to those in Switzerland and Banff, but frankly we think it’s way better! Whether this is your first trek or you’re an experienced climber, the Kashmir Great Lakes Trail holds something for everyone.

The ‘Great Lakes’ as the name suggests treks through many high altitudes alpine lakes situated at the foothills of different snowy mountain peaks in Kashmir. The trails pass through streams, plenty of colourful meadows and cross three mountain passes. The trek from Sonamag to Naranag via Nichnai Pass is among the most beautiful trekking routes in the Himalayas. The trek has innumerable beautiful alpine lakes throughout its trails. The vistas will leave you with memories that would last a lifetime. Since it’s a moderate level trek, it can be taken up by amateur trekkers and fit first-timers. Arduous days, steep and rocky passes and altitudes approaching 4200m all make it a moderately challenging trek in one of the most beautiful and serene parts of Kashmir.

The trek begins from the town of Sonmarg and the easiest way to get there is to fly to Srinagar, where Adventure-Pulse representatives will meet you. From Srinagar, you’ll drive to Sonmarg and spend the night there. The trekking itself begins from Day 2, where you’ll reach the famous Tabletop and set up your very first camp site. From there it’s a 7-day trek through the most beautiful part of India, all the way up to a small town of Naranag where you meet completion.

For some, The Great lakes Trek is hands down the most beautiful trek in India. While you’re on it, the meadows and vistas will draw comparison to Switzerland and the Banff, but we think it’s even better. The various lakes you will cross are Krishnasar, Vishnusar, Gadsar, Nandkol and finally Gangabal. These large alpine lakes will change colour as the day progresses and it truly a spectacle to look out for. The trek takes you through different landscapes and you’ll be awestruck by the drastic way the landscape changes.

What to expect?

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is a trek that involves 8 days of trekking. Over the days, you’ll cross 3 high altitude passes namely the Nichnai, Gadsar and Zaj. The hardest parts of the trek are the climb upto the passes which constitutes about 25-35% of the trek. Apart from the climbs, most of the terrain is flat with long gradual descents through green meadows.

You’ll be crossing majestic silver birch, pine and deodar forests as you journey to above the tree line on day one and back down on day seven. For most of the trek, you’ll be crossing meadows larger than any stretch of the imagination and surrounded by majestic snow-covered mountains. Their Glaciers melt and feed the lakes that you find on the trek.

On average, you can expect to walk for around 7-8 hours a day. We encourage people to walk slowly and at their own pace so that they can acclimatize properly. While on the trek you’ll be camping and we will provide comfortable tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. You can learn more about the staying arrangement and the different meals in the link below.

The 3 mountain passes on the trek

Nichnai Pass –

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is takes you through three passes on different days of your journey. The very first pass you will be crossing is the Nichnai pass. The pass stands at a staggering altitude of 4097 Meters. After surpassing your campsite at Table Top, you will be entering the Nichnai valley. The nichnai valley homes vast meadows, some sections covered by beautiful trees of pine and Bhojpatra and also flowing streams that are the major source of water for the trekkers. Trekkers spend one night at the Nichnai campsite, which is right under the pass itself, in order to minimize the time taken to cross over to the other side of the valley.

The journey towards the foot/base of the pass takes anywhere between 1 to 2 hours depending on where your campsite is located. On this trail, you will walking through a combination trail, which includes small bolder sections, narrow ridges and flat paths alongside a small stream. Once at the foot of the Nichnai pass, we have a steep ascent all the way up to the top, which will take us anywhere between 1 to 2 hours depending on the pace of the group.

The views from the Nichnai pass are absolutely stunning. Imagine being surround by 360 degree views of a magnificent mountains, and standing literally in the middle of nowhere. The Nichnai pass is also very very windy and it also tends to get cold so make sure you have your layers on. There pass also has a Maggie point where you can sit, and relax before you head on the descent. Most of the times, trekkers prefer have a cup hot Kahwa and Maggie and also catch on to their breath before moving ahead.

Once ready to move, we move on to the next part of the journey which is the descent that leads us to the other side of the valley. This decent can be tricky like any other, due to narrow paths and gravel. It’s a short decent however and will take you around 45 – minutes to an hour before reaching the flat meadows of Gadsar.

Gadsar Pass :

The next pass that you will be crossing over is the Gadsar Pass. Before actually crossing the Gadsar pass one would already be in the Gadsar valley. The crossing over of the first pass that was Nichnai, the valley opens up in to the meadows of Gadsar. And the journey onwards of the valley, takes you to one of the most stunning lakes of all, The Gadsar Lake. This lake is usually a lunch point of the journey before reaching the Gadsar campsite. The journey to Gadsar lake takes anywhere between 1.5 to hours, you will be walking through a huge garden of meadows and come across beautiful and colourful flowers everywhere around.. apart from the lake of Gadsar you will also see multiple small glacial lakes on the way. After crossing a beautiful flowing stream, you will finally reach the lake.. This lake is surrounded by huge boulders and right in the middle is where you see this beautiful turquoise lake that changes colours every few seconds because of the reflection of the sky.

After spending a night in the Gadsar valley, it will be time for us to cross over the pass. Gadsar pass will be more challenging to navigate through in comparison to the Nichnai pass. This pass also stands at an altitude close to the Nichnai pass, at 4200 meters.

The journey to Gadsar pass is far more challenging comparatively given that the pass is more steep, takes longer to climb is also quite narrow in some places and is filled with gravel which make it more difficult to surpass. It will take us around 2 hours to cross over the Gadsar pass and another hour and half for the descent.

Zaj Pass :

This is the last pass of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Zaj pass in isolation is actually an easy pass and is not as steep as the other two. However, the overall journey of the day does pit your endurance to test. Before approaching the Zaj pass, one has to cross a huge section of boulders which will take at least an hour or more to cross. This section of boulders is usually the most dreaded boulder section of the journey. It is always recommended that you seek help from the team if you are not very comfortable and sure about balancing your body weight on uneven terrain. After crossing these boulders we have another section of a steep climb, it’s a small hill that will take us only 30 to 40 minutes. Post this climb, as you reach your rest point, you can clearly see the top of the Zaj Pass. After resting for a bit we start walking towards the Pass. Zaj pass is not steep, and has a very gradual climb. This also happens to be the most awaited pass as the views from the top of the pass are absolutely stunning. We get a bird’s eye view of the Nundkol and the Gangabal lakes from the top and also stunning views of Mount Harmukh standing right in front of our eyes.

The descent from Zaj pass towards Satsar, is short but tricky. The entire descent is filled with gravel and takes multiple turns down in a spiral shape .. all the way to the narrow meadow going towards Nundkol. One has to be careful on this descent as there are chances of slipping due to the type of terrain.

Fitness

  • There are three main aspects of training to focus on – strength training, cardiovascular training, and trekking + trekking alternatives.

  • Strength training involves training different muscle groups, so that they can become stronger. There are different exercises for each muscle group, and working them all out 2x-3x a week should be enough to help you get comfortable trekking.

  • Legs / lower body - exercises like squats, glute bridges, step ups and leg presses with help you develop stronger muscles in the lower body.

Core - Exercises like planks, bicycle crunches and leg raises can help with core stability; Pilates is also a core-intensive type of workout that will help.

Upper body - Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and dips will help develop these muscles. You can also use resistance bands or light weights to develop them further.

  • It’s vital to do plenty of cardio training before your trek, so that you can get the most out of your experience

  • Running - This is the most recommended form of cardio activity, as it activates a lot of the same muscles as trekking. Being able to run 10km in 60 minutes will allow you to get the most out of your trek.

Cycling / Swimming - If you have knee issues, or don’t enjoy running, you can also opt for cycling and swimming. Being able to cycling 30-50km or swim for 30-40 minutes, thrice a week, should be good to help you with treks like EBC.

HIIT training / Crossfit - Another option to level up your cardio training is to opt for high intensity aerobic exercises like HIIT or Crossfit, 2-3 times a week
The aim is to get your heart rate up, so you do not get winded on long days of trekking

  • Hiking
Try to get outdoors and go for a hike on the weekends! Uphill trails of 4-8 kilometres are will help you get used to trekking. Make it a point to carry a loaded backpack, and walk in your trekking shoes.

  • Hiking Alternatives
Climbing stairs, and using the treadmill or stairmaster on an incline, will help prepare you for treks. Make it a point to carry a loaded backpack so that you can get used to the extra weight; and use your trekking boots, so that you can break them in and walk comfortably.

  • If you’re confused with all this information, no need to worry! The most important thing with training is consistency, and staying injury-free. Your training week should ideally have
    Strength training - 3 sessions
    Cardio training - 3 sessions
Hiking - 1 long session, best on the weekends
Rest and stretching - at least 1 day

We usually look at weather reports before leaving for the trek. In case the weather is unfavorable, we could delay it to the next day depending upon the Itinerary. A buffer day/s is always built in the itinerary as contingency if we get hit by unfavorable weather conditions. In the worse situation, we may have to turn back midway, but safety is always a priority which cannot be compromised on.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Srinagar

Our team will organize group pick ups from the airport once you land and drive you to your hotel in Srinagar. Today you have the opportunity to catch some rest as well as explore the beautiful city, experience Shikara rides, indulge in some Kashmiri delicacies and also go shopping.

Day 2

Drive from Srinagar to Shitkari and trek to Table Top

We checkout from our hotel in Srinagar and the team drives together towards Gagangir to reach the start point of our trek which is a small village of Shitkari. Today is the very first day of your trekking journey and hence we will take it easy so as to enable your body to acclimatise better. We start our journey from the base of the village and make our way all the way up to Table Top. The journey to Table Top is merely 3 – 4hours depending on the pace of the group, but is majorly uphill. However, since this is a short day we recommend you to take it slow and enjoy the climb.

Day 3

Table Top to Nichnai

After spending the first night at our campsite at Table Top, we leave for our next bit towards the Nichnai campsite. The journey today is easier than Day 1 as it predominantly won’t have much of a climb involved. You will be walking through a beautiful Birch forest in the first half. You will also encounter some small boulder patches just before approaching the Nichnai valley. Right there, just under the Nichnai Pass is where our campsite will be set up. Today’s journey is also approximately 4 hours, depending on your pace. We recommend you to take your time and enjoy the journey, in turn also allow your body to acclimatize, and prep for the next day.

Day 4

Nichnai to Vishnusar Lake

Today you’ll cross your first pass of the trek the Nichnai Pass. As you exit the campsite, you will begin your climb to the Nichnai Pass. The trail is pretty much flat for the first 30 minutes as you make your way to the pass. After the first half an hour, you’ll have to cross a stream and make your way towards the right side of the valley. This is where the real climb begins. The climb is gradual with 3 steep sections. The climb to the pass should take around 2-3 hours. The top of the pass is marked with a rock that mentions the height of the pass. From the top, you’ll descend all the way back to the bottom of the valley and trek for another 2 hours to hit our campsite location. The campsite is located beside the stream fed by Vishnusar Lake. After a couple of hours of rest, we will start our 15-minute hike to Vishnusar Lake.

Day 5

Vishnusar to Gadsar Lake

Today is the longest day of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. After discovering Vishansar Lake the previous day, we start the journey towards its sibling the Krishansar Lake which lies just over a ridge. The trek up to Krishnsar will take a comfortable 20 minutes. We take its eastern shore to ascend the second pass of the trek, the Gadsar Pass (4050m). Gadsar Pass is clearly visible from Krishnsar and does seem a little intimidating. Our team will make sure you pace yourself well as you make the climb to the top. The trail is steep, narrow and should take close to 2 hours. Once, you reach the top, both lakes appear to be placed side by side. The twin lakes of Vishansar and Krishansar, “the source of the Neelam River“. The trek to our campsite at Kustoor Kout will take 4 hours through mainly descending terrain. En route, you will cross the Gadsar Lake which is one the larger lakes on the trek.

Day 6

Gadsar to Satsar Lake

We ascend, leaving Kostoor Kout leaving the Gadsar valley and enter the meadow of Rasbal. It’s the Rasbal where a flowing river disappears underground. Also known as Doobtha Pani, the stream appears to pass through the mountain where it reappears at the bottom of the valley. A truly mesmerizing sight. We continue our trek through seven small lakes of Satsar and camp at Megandoab at the foothills of the third pass of Zaj for an overnight stay. The trek to the campsite will take a good 4 hours. If you’re lucky, you might see Nanga Parbat in the distance from the high point of the trek.

Day 7

Satsar to Nandkol

Today is when we cross the final pass of the trek. The trek to the Zaj Pass is tricky as the trail passes through rocky moraine. The rocky trail opens a couple of hundred metres before the final climb to the pass. The climb will take close to an hour. The pass is hidden behind a false summit which is something that you should remember. From the top of the pass, we can see Mount Haramukh (5300m) and at its feet lie the twin beautiful alpine lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol. Our final campsite will be placed on the banks of the Nundkol Lake. The descent is tricky as the trail is marked with loose rocks and scree. We will take a hike up to Gangabal lake after a couple of hours of rest. Like Vishnusar and Krishnsar, Gangabal and Nundkol are located side by side but at a difference of altitude.

Day 8

Buffer Day

Day 9

Nandkol to Naranag

For some, the trek from Gangabal to Naranag is the hardest. The trek is largely downhill but after a couple of day of trekking, your body will be tired. The trail will hit the treeline in about an hour. It flows through the valley and crosses, deodar and pine forests on the way. The trek will take close to 5 hours, but it will feel like 10. At Naranag, you can visit the Naga Temple built in the 8th Century. After Naranag, we will drive back to civilization in Srinagar. The last night will be spent in a hotel in Srinagar.

Day 10

Fly out from Srinagar

After completing the trek the previous day, we all will be back to civilization, with hearts filled with gratitude and fond memories of the people and the mountains. We wake up to a delicious breakfast after a good sleep in the comfort of our hotel rooms. Our team will organize group drops to the airport for your departure. We bid goodbye to each other, with a promise to meet on yet another epic journey in the mountains soon!
