This serene, unexplored trek gives a much-needed break from the city

Overview :

The stunning landscape of Kashmir and its valleys are home to a number of beautiful trekking destinations in India. Over the last few years the number of trekkers stepping into Kashmir has remarkably increased thus also leading to a lot of undiscovered trails being explored by adventure enthusiasts. The silent Meadows trek is an outcome of one such discovery.

Adventure Pulse, brings to you, this hidden gem located in the Yusmarg region that happens to be one of the most stunning trekking destinations in Kashmir.

Yusmarg is a small hill station in the western Ghat of Budgam district in Kashmir which is known for its beautiful landscapes, pine nurseries, green pastures and various waterbodies. Yusmarg is home to pleasant flora and fauna and is often referred to as a paradise for trekkers. Given the number of visitors the valley sees every season, there has been an increase in the number of guest houses and home stays in the past few years, thus also allowing the local population to benefit economically. Yusmarg is located just around 48 kilometers away from Srinagar and is an approximate 2 hours drive.

The stunning landscape :

The Silent Meadows trek from Yusmarg traverses some of the hidden jewels in the Kashmiri mountain-scape – the pristine alpine high-altitude lakes of Tosa Maidan. If you are looking for green meadows filled with colourful wildflowers, pristine color-changing water lakes, meandering streams and amazing Himalayan views from high passes, then the Silent Meadows Trek is the most highly recommended trek.

Starting from the popular hill station Yusmarg, the trail follows ancient routes taken by the Gujjars, the nomadic shepherds of Kashmir. Every day on the trail, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of rugged snowcapped mountains, colourful grasslands, and trout-filled crystal-clear lakes. There is also a high pass to be crossed, the highest being at 13,700 feet close to Noonwan and rocky terrains to be navigated frequently. It is a physically and mentally challenging trek and would require the trekkers to be physically fit and to have a penchant for the Himalayan remoteness to enjoy this trek.

Who do we recommend this trek to ?

If you are looking to do the entire circuit of The Silent Meadows Trek starting from Yousmarg all the way to Doodhpatri while covering the Noonwan and Astar valley, this journey will take you about 8 days of trekking and you need to have excellent levels of physical fitness to ensure a comfortable experience in the mountains.

However, unlike many other treks the Silent Meadows Trek is easily customizable as a family Adventure. We highly recommend this trek from children from the age of 6 years and above, with no upper age limit. it is an excellent choice for those who have never experienced high altitude treks before, irrespective of their age. The demand for physical fitness needed for trekking in Kashmir is usually on the higher side, but that is not the case with this trek.

What makes this trek an apt choice for a family Adventure ?

1) The customized duration of the trek is only 4 days making it an excellent time frame to not only enjoy the beauty of the landscape yet keeping it short enough so children and adults are not exhausted.

2) The terrain of the trek is not tricky and doesn’t have any major boulders (in the customized itinerary) making it a good choice for people of any age group.

3) It gives an opportunity for children to explore the beauty of the Himalayas and experience camping in the middle of wilderness while also allowing a technological detox.

4) Since you are not going above 3600 meters, it makes acclimatization much easier, thus helping beginners and first time trekkers.

5) The days are not long / hectic given distances covered on a daily basis are not more than 3 to 4 kilometres and hence allowing enough rest before reaching every campsite.

Reasons why The Silent Meadows Trek should be on your list –

  1. Off beat Adventure – If you are somebody who is looking for an off best adventure then the silent Meadows trek is an excellent choice. Trekking in Kashmir has become a popular over the last few years but that also means that a lot of the trails have become crowded and seem to have lost that charm. This is not the case with the Silent Meadows trek.
Adventure pulse is very proud to be the pioneer of this new trail and that allows you to experience the Himalayas at its very best and as raw as possible.
  2. Customized Itinerary – This trek is that it can be easily customized depending on the group of people that are joining on us on the adventure. With the help of our Premium logistics and support team, this trek can be made in to a family adventure where children as young as 6 years old and adults without any restriction of age can comfortably undertake it.
  3. Exploring more – If you are someone who has already trekked in Kashmir and has covered other beautiful trails like the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, Tarsar Marsar lakes trek, etc. and are looking for something new, something different or more off beat, then the silent Meadow Trek fits right in your bucket.
  4. Away from the crowd – Given the fact that Kashmir valleys have now become crowded with the number of trackers coming into the region, this trek will provide you the opportunity to get away from people and explore the high altitude in peace and tranquility.
  5. Technological Detox – If you are looking to get away from the noise of the city and need a technological detox then this trek is the apt choice for you. The trail has very limited network on one or two points which is also very patchy . In most places you will be away from any network towers which will allow you to soak into the magic of nature without any buzzing sounds of your mobile phone.
  6. Exploring Yusmarg and Doodhpatri – Embarking on this journey will also allow you to cover some other exotic places in Kashmir like Yousmarg and Doodhpatri. Yousmarg is a small hill station in the Budgam district in Kashmir and is popular for its beautiful landscape screen pastures and where is spine nursery. it is also often called as a Paradise for trekkers. On the other hand Doodhpatri is a hill station which is located in the Khan Sahib Tehsil of Jammu and Kashmir.
The name Doodhpatri means value of milk it is said that a famous Saint of Kashmir has prayed here and once when he was in search of water in the Meadows, to offer prayers, he pricked the ground with a stick in search of water and milk came out.

  • The trek to Silent Meadows can be steep & strenuous at some places, even though it does not require that you have any previous mountaineering experience in particular, It’s important that you be in good physical condition and be able to hike at a comfortable pace for 5-6 hours over hilly terrain with a light day pack. Good cardio-vascular conditioning and muscles that are used to hiking will make your trip much more enjoyable. Our goal is to trek at max. Altitude of 13,750 feet and walk through beautiful meadows and glaciers leading to pristine lakes of Kashmir. You will spend 6 - 7 days in a land where life is simple, trails are steep and the air is thin. We recommend the following schedule to the participants:

WE RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING SCHEDULE TO THE PARTICIPANTS

  • WEEK ONE/TWO: The participants should be develop the habit of being able to run / brisk walk  for a minimum of 3-4 Km at least 4-5 days a week. This would represent at least 20-25 minutes of cardio exercise. Though difficult at first, keep at it. You can stop and take breaks as well.  During the day, you should get into the habit of avoiding elevators and taking the steps. You should be able to climb at least 4/5 flights of steps daily. (Avoid going down steps too fast as this could result in some knee injuries). If you Don’t enjoy running and are into some other sport like cycling or swimming, spend about 45 mins cycling or about 600 – 800 mts of swimming for at least 4 days a week.
  • WEEK THREE/FOUR: Assuming you have successfully survived week one and are consistent with your exercise, you can take up the pace a notch. Increase your distance to 5/6 kms per day and 5 times a week, you can additionally go to a gym. Avoid heavy weight training. Focus more on a core workout. These are your muscle groups that run along the length of your body and helps maintain your posture and sustains you during your long hours of working.
  • WEEK FIVE/SIX: In addition to the week two exercise, one additional feature you should add in Week three is walking for half an hour during the evenings with a backpack on carrying 3-4 kgs. This could be 2lts of water, some snacks, a jacket etc. This will help strengthen your back and shoulders thus preparing you for the long hours of trekking. If you don’t want to just simply walk, also try increasing your time on climbing flight of steps. As compared to week one, you should aim to be able to climb 10-12 flight of stairs comfortably.
  • WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT: Sustenance. Keep up the tempo, sustain the workout. Try avoiding doing anything very rigorous but be consistent with morning and evening walks/runs and climbing flight of stairs.
  • WEEK NINE: Sustain the workout. Increase only if you feel comfortable. Start doing an additional 10-15 mins of climbing stairs in the morning/evening with a daypack of 2-3 Kg; about 30-35 floors once a day should help increase the stamina and endurance considerably.

Please remember, consistency is the key here. Do not do anything to exert yourself or something that will increase chances of Injury. Running / brisk walking 4-5 kms for 5 days in a week is far better than running a 20 km on one day of the week and injuring your Knee/Ligaments in the process. If you can be consistent with above mentioned schedule, The Great Lakes Trek, though physically challenging, will become a pleasant and enjoyable experience for you. Feel free to call us or mail us in case you want more details on how to prepare for this trek!
