Trekking in the Shayadris
The Shayadris offer a vast range of trails among which the landscape between Pune & Mumbai stands out as one of the most popular hiking & trekking destinations. From famous forts to monsoon trails to outdoor rock climbing, the Western Ghats have a place to fulfil anyone’s adventure quotient. These Ghats also help make a great training program for those aspiring for high-altitude treks & climbs. However, our today’s focus is going to be on a famous beautiful monsoon trek near Pune, the Andharban Trek.
Overview –
The Andharban trek is situated over a plateau overlooking a large valley called Kundalika valley, made of interesting rocky formations. The view of Kundalika Valley reminds me of the Grand Canyon whenever I go there. Being in the wild does not mean you’re in for a rough adventure and interesting enough the Andharban trek makes a soothing trail as most of the route is through the Andharban forest with little peaks into the valley below, thus making it a beautiful sight for photographers and trekking enthusiasts alike. The rainy season is well known for getting to the Andharban Jungle as the hills beside offer you a lush green view of the forests and valleys. Monsoon or Post Monsoon season is best time to visit Andharban Trek as you get to see so many waterfalls and streams along the trail and may even find some natural ponds.
The trail is a simple dirt track that takes you into the forest and sometimes brings you to vast grass fields. Being famous in monsoons the Andharban offers a view of continuous waterfalls and rivulets that fall along the path of your trek. One is also gifted with a plunge pool at the base of some waterfalls, a place loved by the Aquaphile. A dip on the return is a truly satisfying experience, giving one a chance to experience nature at its best.

Location of the trek –
The Andharban trek starting point is around 70 kilometres from Pune central and 130 kilometres from the city of Mumbai. Andharban Forest is located at the start of the Konkan range. The road trip on the way to the Andharban trek lies in the valleys of the Mulshi taluka and offers a beautiful sight leading to a gateway to the Konkan region. You will also be driving alongside on blue waters of Mulshi Lake, a mesmerizing sight that is less fetched so close to a busy city such as Pune. The trek starts from Independence Point near Pimpari Village and ends near the backwaters of Bhira Dam. It is suggested to leave early in the morning as the entire drive from Pune to the Andharban Trek start point would take anything between 2-3 hours as a one-way journey and returning before the night sets in, is always an advantage. It is also advised not to go for your first trek without any guide or group, chances of getting lost in the forest do stand out, especially on the way back towards the starting point.
Duration of the trek –
The entire duration of the trek is 5-6 hours on average along with quick breaks, however being with an enthusiastic group makes hours feel like minutes, thus making the trek much easier than thought or if done all alone.
Fitness level required –
A basic level of fitness is sufficient, as it is a simple walk through the forest, however, it requires some stamina as one would need to walk for a minimum of 5 hours in total. Climbing up the stairs of a tall building is a very simple way to build your stamina and the best part is that it can be practiced at your home as well. The Andharban Trek is also well encouraged for beginners who want to get started with hiking or trekking. It is also advised to keep sipping water, to refrain from severe dehydration and fatigue.
2 different ways to do the Andharban Trek –
The entire route of the Andharban trek includes starting the trail at a village named Pimpari and ending at the backwaters of the Bhira Dam. This trek starts with a forest and opens up onto a large grass field, halfway through the trek. After which, you pass through a village and descend down the hill thus leading to the finishing point near the dam.
Alternative option to do this trek is by making it a loop track. One can start at the same base village Pimapri and returning from the halfway near the vast grass fields. This change in landscape is witnessed as one completes walking through the forest. This place also makes a good lunch break after which one can head back to the start point. Taking a return journey on the same route saves a hiker from having to arrange separate transport at both the start and end points. It also reduces some of the return travel time.
Things to carry during the trek –
- 20-30 litre backpack – the bag should be comfortable in order to walk for long durations. Also make sure to have a rain-cover for the bag or waterproof your belongings with plastic bags.
- 2-3 litre of water – keep yourself hydrated as it’s a long trek.
- Energy bars or trail snacks – to keep the energy levels high during this long trek.
- Rainwear – complete rain gear is a must as the trek is most suggested for the rains.
- Swimming trunk & towel
- Trekking or hiking shoes. (preferably waterproof for the rain)
- Mosquito repellent – is a must to keep away from flying insects.
- Ensure to not wear any kind of shorts as it is a jungle after all and little insects can be anywhere.
The Andharban Trek is an entirely different trek to explore in terms of terrain and views. It had personally taken a top place on my bucket list as it offers a beautiful hike through a dense forest trail, unlike many around the city. Another plus point was that the Andharban Trek meets all the criteria like being close to Pune, a trek that can be completed home to home between 6:00 am – 6:00 pm, and at the same time, it has beautiful forest-like views & the flora around is a treat to the eyes! If you are looking for an easy to moderate-level trek, close to the city, which can be completed in a day’s time, The Andharban is your answer! A getaway that will give you a much-needed break from your chaotic life and schedule!
Considering all the reasons above I have been to the Andharban Trek three times and I’m definitely looking forward to another chance.
